The Centre for Culture, Identity and Education (CCIE) is one of a number of centres and institutes located in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia.

In addition, CCIE Director, Dr. Handel Kashope Wright, is a faculty member in the Department of Educational Studies (EDST) and Past Chair of the David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education (2006-2009). He also is a member of the 2006 Early Senior Scholars Program of the Peter Wall Institute at UBC, an Institute that aims to create “a community of scholars, composed of outstanding researchers across the whole and campus” and “who will contribute significantly to the intellectual life of the university.”

The Faculty of Humanities at McMaster recently announced the introduction of a new program in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory which will allow students to take courses on such various and interdisciplinary topics as Critical Race Theory, Reading Film, Globalization and Postcolonial Literature, Contemporary Critical Theory, Rhetoric, Culture, Catastrophe: AIDS and its Representations, Modernity/ Postmodernity/ Visuality, and Contemporary Popular Culture, consider making this dynamic interdisciplinary program part of your university future.

Wilfred Laurier University

Wilfred Laurier offers an undergraduate Cultural Studies Program that offers students a full range of course and includes a theory requirement, a period/history requirement and several core electives. The Honours BA in Cultural Studies can be combined with another BA Honours program.

George Mason University

The Cultural Studies PhD Program at George Mason University provides comprehensive training in the contemporary field. The first stand-alone interdisciplinary PhD in cultural studies in the United States, the program at George Mason draws on the expertise of faculty in ten disciplines, centers, and programs. Special strengths of the program include gender/sexuality, film and media, and culture and political economy. Available concentrations run the gamut of cultural topics: African-American studies, early modern literatures, Latin American modernities, contemporary museum studies, and popular culture. Community Organizations

CCIE's mandate and vision intersects with a number of community-focused organizations and settings.

Highlander Center

The Highlander Center provides education and support to poor and working people fighting economic injustice, poverty, prejudice, and environmental destruction. It helps grassroots leaders create the tools necessary for building broad-based movements for change.

Vancouver Multicultural Society

The Vancouver Multicultural Society is the longest serving agency in British Columbia established to promote multiculturalism. It originally served as an umbrella organization for ethnocultural groups in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. The Society currently represents an array of ethnocultural groups, arts, culture and non-governmental organizations; public and private companies; service agencies, crown corporations and individuals committed to anti-racism, cross-cultural harmony and social justice. Through dialogue, public education and partnership, the Society promotes mutual respect and understanding among groups and the accommodation of all citizens in the Canadian cultural mosaic regardless of age, race, gender, religious belief,social status or ethnicity in accordance with the Canada's Multiculturalism Act and Constitution.

Whistler Interfaith Society

The Whistler Interfaith Society, originally the Whistler Skiers Chapel Society, is an organization that aims to build bridges of inter-religious understanding and cooperation. It is an organization that is especially attuned to the complexities of providing spiritual and religious care in multi-cultural and multi-faith settings.

Nova Scotia Cultural Action Network

The Nova Scotia Cultural Action Network is a coalition of individuals who are dedicated to the progressive development of the province's arts and culture for the benefit of all Nova Scotians. The Nova Scotia CAN has several objectives and goals. These include, among others, facilitating a cross-sector dialogue about the relevance and importance of artistic and cultural activity to the economic and social well-being of NS and creating a dynamic partnership of artists, cultural organizations, patrons, business associations , foundations and governments to work full time for the development and promotion of the arts in NS.

Cultural Studies Association

CCIE Associates are located all over the world and are affiliated with various national and international Cultural Studies Associations.

The Association of Cultural Studies (International)

Founded in 2002, the Association for Cultural Studies (ACS) aims at forming and promoting an effective worldwide community of cultural studies. It is intended as a tool for building strong interdisciplinary and transnational connections by offering meaningful meeting places for the great diversity of committed scholars in this field. The ACS helps establish, maintain and strengthen contacts between cultural studies scholars and workers across different disciplines and within as well as between the different countries and regions of the world, by spreading information and encouraging collaborative work, facilitating the creation and linking of local, national and regional cultural studies groups. By providing a broad structure for a plurality of cultural studies approaches, the ACS promotes public understanding of its goals, agendas and traditions.

The Canadian Association for Cultural Studies

CACS aims to promote the interests of those teaching and studying cultural studies in Canada by facilitating the dissemination and exchange of research nationally and internationally, by exploring professional issues, and by organizing scholarly and professional meetings. It also aims to create greater public spaces across Canada for the development of productive relationships between people from institutional and non-institutional sites. To this end it aims to make connections with, and plan activities in concert with social, political and community groups. These activities may include, but are not limited to, the production and dissemination of pamphlets, working papers and other materials designed as interventions into public discussions of current social, political and cultural issues.

The Cultural Studies Association (USA)

Founded in 2003, the Cultural Studies Association (USA) provides a forum for scholars of Cultural Studies, in all its diverse manifestations, to exchange their work and ideas across disciplinary lines and institutional locations. The Association currently does not charge dues. All those who have registered for a CSA conference automatically become members. The Annual Meeting of the CSA provides a forum for scholars, students, and other persons interested in Cultural Studies in all its diverse manifestations to exchange their work and ideas across disciplinary lines and institutional locations.

The Cultural Studies Association of Australasia

The Cultural Studies Association of Australia was established in 1992, and in 2002 became the Cultural Studies Association of Australasia. The broad aims of the Association are to develop the study, teaching and public profile of Cultural Studies throughout Australasia. As well as staging some of Australia’s most interesting and cross-disciplinary humanities conferences, the CSAA hosts a range of on-line and print activities through the year.

Cultural Studies Journals

CCIE Director, Dr. Handel Kashope Wright serves on the editorial board of a number of cultural studies journals, including Cultural Studies, the International Journal of Cultural Studies, the European Journal of Cultural Studies, Topia, and Critical Arts (see below). He has also edited and co-edited several special journal issues, including a co-edited themed issue of the Review of Education, Pedagogy and Cultural Studies on Cultural Studies and Education; a co-edited themed issue of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education on Paradigm Proliferation in Educational Research; and an edited themed issue of International Education on Africans and Western Discourses of Empowerment.

Cultural Studies

Cultural Studies is an international journal which explores the relation between cultural practices, everyday life, material, economic, political, geographical and historical contexts. It fosters more open analytic, critical and political conversations by encouraging people to push the dialogue into fresh, uncharted territory. It also aims to intervene in the processes by which the existing techniques, institutions and structures of power are reproduced, resisted and transformed.

European Journal of Cultural Studies

The European Journal of Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary journal that brings together articles from a textual, philosophical and social scientific background, as well as from cultural studies. It engages in critical discussions on power relations concerning gender, class, sexual preference, ethnicity and other macro or micro sites of political struggle.

International Journal of Cultural Studies

The International Journal of Cultural Studies provides a lively meeting-place for international perspectives on cultural and media developments across the globe. Specifically, the journal features theoretical, empirical and historical research which is based in local and regional realities, and deals with everyday practices, identities, media, texts and cultural forms. It publishes work which suggests new directions, ideas and modes of inquiry to reinvigorate cultural studies for a new generation of researchers and readers.


TOPIA provides a venue for critical thinkers at work in the domains of culture, nationality, technology, environment, gender, race and the politics of space and time. The journal features historical, theoretical, critical and experimental essays on culture that are accessible to a wide readership in the humanities and social sciences.

Space and Culture

Space and Culture is a journal that brings together dynamic, critical interdisciplinary research at the interface of cultural geography, sociology, cultural studies, architectural theory, ethnography, communications, urban studies, environmental studies and discourse analysis. Space and Culture's unique focus is on social spaces, such as the home, laboratory, leisure spaces, the city, and virtual spaces.

Review of Education, Pedagogy & Cultural Studies

The Review of Education, Pedagogy & Cultural Studies is the only journal which publishes critical essays that explore pedagogy and its relation to a wide variety of political, social, cultural and economic issues. It is particularly concerned with issues focusing on how pedagogy works within and across a variety of sites (not limited to formal spaces of education, but including popular culture, museums, film, and other cultural spaces) and how pedagogical practices emerge out of specific historical struggles, concrete projects, and particular relations of power. The journal is interdisciplinary, and addresses the relationship of race, class, age and gender to particular projects, struggles, and issues.


Taboo is a semi-annual journal which provides an academic forum for the study of teaching and pedagogy that focuses on the relationship between education and its socio-cultural context. At present, the journal does not have a website, but the journal editor is is Dr. Shirley Steinberg, Brooklyn College.

Critical Arts

Critical Arts examines the relationship between texts and contexts of media in the Third World, cultural formations and other forms of expression. It aims to create a space for an African and Third World perspective of media, culture and social theory. Critical Arts also aims to challenge and engage conventional academic practices which reinforce undemocratic relations in society.


Discourse is an international, fully peer-reviewed journal publishing contemporary research and theorizing in the cultural politics of education. The journal publishes academic articles from throughout the world which contribute to contemporary debates on the new social, cultural and political configurations that now mark education as a highly contested but important cultural site. Discourse adopts a broadly critical orientation, but is not tied to any particular ideological, disciplinary or methodological position. It encourages interdisciplinary approaches to the analysis of educational theory, policy and practice. It welcomes papers which explore speculative ideas in education, are written in innovative ways, or are presented in experimental ways.

Media, Culture and Society

Media, Culture and Society provides an international forum for the presentation of research and discussion concerning the media, including the newer information and communication technologies, within their political, economic, cultural and historical contexts. The journal is interdisciplinary, regularly engaging with a wider range of issues in cultural and social analysis. Its focus is on substantive topics and on critique and innovation in theory and method.

Public Culture

Public Culture is a reviewed interdisciplinary journal of cultural studies that seeks a critical understanding of the global cultural flows and the cultural forms of the public sphere which define the late twentieth century. As such, the journal provides a forum for the discussion of the places and occasions where cultural, social, and political differences emerge as public phenomena, manifested in everything from highly particular and localized events in popular or folk culture to global advertising, consumption, and information networks.

Critical Studies in Mass Communication

Critical Studies in Mass Communication provides a home for scholarship in media and mass communication from a cultural studies and critical perspective. It particularly welcomes cross-disciplinary works that enrich debates among various disciplines, critical traditions, methodological and analytical approaches, and theoretical standpoints.

Cultural Critique

Cultural Critique provides a forum for international and interdisciplinary explorations of intellectual controversies, trends, and issues in culture, theory, and politics. Emphasizing critique rather than criticism, the journal draws on the diverse and conflicting approaches of Marxism, feminism, psychoanalysis, semiotics, political economy, and hermeneutics to offer readings in society and its transformation.


Screen is an international journal of film and television studies, publishing peer-reviewed work on a wide range of topics by established and new scholars alike. Journal issues contain a range of work, including scholarly essays, debates and reports on current research, and book reviews and review essays.

Extending beyond the postmodern, boundary 2, an international journal of literature and culture, approaches problems in these areas from a number of politically, historically, and theoretically informed perspectives. boundary 2 remains committed to understanding the present and approaching the study of national and international culture and politics through literature and the human sciences.

Social Text covers a broad spectrum of social and cultural phenomena, applying the latest interpretive methods to the world at large. The journal consistently focuses attention on questions of gender, sexuality, race, and the environment, publishing key works by the most influential social and cultural theorists.

Fuse Magazine

FUSE features articles, artists' projects and critical analysis on issues in the arts pertaining to criticism and curation, the visual arts, independent film and video, new media, cultural diversity, visible minorities, First Nations, community-based and gay and lesbian positive art.

Critical Methodologies

Critical Methodologies is an interdisciplinary quarterly publication drawing from those scholarly traditions in the social sciences and the humanities which are premised on a critical, performance-based cultural studies agenda.
