Yao Xiao

Dr. Yao Xiao蕭堯 (aka “sweden”) comes from rural Cantonese-Hakka families in the karst mountains of inland Guangdong and is an immigrant to Turtle Island. He advocates justice-oriented, grassroots-initiated and community-based education through multilingual writing/translation/cultural production, and serves on the boards of directors at Yarrow Intergenerational Society for Justice and Youth Collaborative for Chinatown. His work involves participation and collaboration in the fields of Asian cultural studies, African cultural studies, migrant and diasporic education, critical adult education, and decolonial transformation – exemplified by publications in journals including Cultural Studies, Critical Arts, and Postcolonial Directions in Education, as well as community projects including How Water Remembers 水記得, The Paper Trail to The 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act, and 360 Riot Walk. He teaches social justice and diversity education at the Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia, and serves as a mentor at the UBC Undergraduate Research Experience Program
